The book Rosa Parks from the Little People, Big Dreams series by Lisbeth Kaiser is a must-have book for the classroom library, in my opinion! It is a biography about Rosa Parks, beginning with her life as a child in a small town close to Montgomery, Alabama, then describing the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and then going on to detail her life after she moved away from Alabama as an adult。 What I like about the book is that it emphasizes how normal and relatable Rosa was; she was just a normal kid who The book Rosa Parks from the Little People, Big Dreams series by Lisbeth Kaiser is a must-have book for the classroom library, in my opinion! It is a biography about Rosa Parks, beginning with her life as a child in a small town close to Montgomery, Alabama, then describing the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and then going on to detail her life after she moved away from Alabama as an adult。 What I like about the book is that it emphasizes how normal and relatable Rosa was; she was just a normal kid who was never treated fairly。 I feel as though many times when children read biographies about people who did amazing things or about people who are much older than them, they admire the person, but don't always feel as though they can relate。 This text talks about how she played with her brother when she was younger, grew up and went to school, rode the bus to various places, etc。 and the whole time she had to follow all of these rules that she knew were not right, or fair。 I think this is an approachable and relatable storyline/lifestyle for many young kids, and the text really puts them in Rosa's shoes。 The reason that I chose a biography about Rosa Parks as one of my WOW books is because in my field placement this semester, I got to see my teacher read this book aloud to the class and the conversation that she started with it with her 3rd grade students。 I was fascinated by their insights and engagement with the topic, so it made the book even more of a WOW text for me! Similarly, I would use this book in the classroom as a tool to introduce the topic of fairness and being kind to others, but also to talk about race relations and being critical consumers of laws that are put in place around certain groups of people。 I think that the story of Rosa Parks is also a great one to teach about courage and standing up for what you believe to be right in a situation when bad things are taking place。 So, I would definitely use this book as a Read Aloud book, although I would leave it in my classroom library for students to read by themselves afterward! This book could be a part of a Civil Rights unit, but I also don't plan on limiting texts like this that happen to take place during the Civil Rights Movement to a certain unit, but rather to read them regularly throughout the school year! I also like that the end of this book has a time line with pictures of Rosa Parks at different times in her life, so I could use this text as a way to integrate social studies concepts such as building timelines to portray important historical events into our ELA block! Or, incorporate the read aloud into our social studies block! This book was a WOW book for me because of the simple, yet impactful and effective telling of an important person in history, the beautiful and engaging illustrations, the valuable messages that this text sends and can be taught using it, and the possible ways I see myself integrating it into various content areas! 。。。more

Anyway, it it is an historical/biographical sort of series, Rosa Parks is my go to for evaluation。 Very few people tell her story the way I like best。 Rosa Parks as a hard-working and dignified woman of color who refused to give up her seat is pretty common。 And I don't deny that Parks was brave: she knew full and damn well she was pulling a whole load of trouble down upon herself。 She knew because it was a deliberate and considered act on her part。 She knew because Claudette Colvin had already been there and done that, nine months earlier。 Colvin was braver in one way because she was 15, pregnant, and unmarried when she refused to give up her seat, and she did it knowing just how little respect the world had for her。Rosa was brave in a different way。 She was lighter-skinned, she was a grown-up woman who wore glasses and looked demure。 She worked for the NAACP。 and she refused to give up her seat specifically to challenge the law with a more sympathetic plaintiff。 I don't necessarily approve of the decision to back a "better" plaintiff, but I cannot argue that it worked。So, yeah, this book presents the good plaintiff as if she had no forethought, no strategy。 I prefer my heroines to be less modest and more cunning。 More importantly, I think it's a really good idea to teach how to be civilly disobedient。 That it is a choice we can make, and that it is a better choice than say, getting a mob together on Facebook to storm the Capital。 Library copy 。。。more

I love this series of books! They are absolutely perfect for Kindergarten, with clear, factual information written in a way that young children can understand。 I purchased this because I need more female black history books - I want to honor women all the time in classroom - not just in February and March。 Highly recommended。 Q2021 book。

Another brilliant book from this series, the second I have read by Lisbeth Kaiser, and she has written two crackers, the subjects helping her。This pointing out the ridiculous segregation policies of the USA。How the racist policies could be seen as a positive thing beggars belief。Anyway this is another great read, and another really compulsory read for all。

The layout of this book, with beautiful illustrations and not too much text on each page, makes it suitable for teaching younger readers about the harsh reality of racism in America in the 1950s。 It makes a good starting point for discussion around persevering instances of racism, for example, you could explore how even after slavery, there was segregation, but how after segregation there is still hate speech。 This must be an issue that is not presented to children as something of the past or so The layout of this book, with beautiful illustrations and not too much text on each page, makes it suitable for teaching younger readers about the harsh reality of racism in America in the 1950s。 It makes a good starting point for discussion around persevering instances of racism, for example, you could explore how even after slavery, there was segregation, but how after segregation there is still hate speech。 This must be an issue that is not presented to children as something of the past or something that only occurs in other areas of the world but as the continued lived reality for people of colour。 I especially appreciate the two detailed pages at the back of the book with facts about Rosa’s life, these could have included more detail but I appreciate this would not cater so well to the younger audience so could just be used as a starting point for more research in older children。 Park’s act of defiance led to substantial legal change and was also one of huge bravery which caused much danger for her and her family, although this could have been touched on more when Kaiser explains how she had to move out of Alabama。 This earned her the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal (1979), the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and a statue in the Capitol’s National Statutory Hall。 This is another book I will be sure to have in my classroom, as part of a larger collection of books celebrating POC women。 。。。more
